Granite. The workhorse. At $12 to $25 per square foot installed it is mid-priced, but its 6-to-7 Mohs hardness and near-zero absorption make it the cheapest stone to own: it does not etch, it barely scratches, and sealing intervals stretch to 3 to 5 years. Honed granite in a kitchen is the single most economically rational stone floor in the category.
Quartzite. Metamorphosed sandstone, and the hardest common flooring stone at Mohs 7. It behaves like granite in service — dense, acid-resistant, effectively maintenance-light — and it is frequently mis-sold as marble in showrooms because some quartzites look like it. Travertine. A porous calcareous stone with natural voids that are either filled at the factory or left open. At $10 to $18 per square foot installed it is the least expensive of the “premium-looking” stones, and it is soft — Mohs 3 to 4 — so it scratches and needs a tight sealing cycle. Slate. Metamorphic and layered, at $10 to $22 per square foot installed. It is acid-resistant and naturally slip-resistant thanks to its cleft surface, which makes it common in mudrooms, entries and wet areas. Its weakness is delamination: the same layered structure that gives it texture means thin flakes can spall off the surface over time, and lower-grade slate does this more.
Limestone. Chemically close to marble and priced below it at $12 to $24 per square foot installed. Softer and more absorbent than nearly any other flooring stone, with water absorption commonly reaching 8 percent, so it stains readily and takes the tightest sealing cycle in the table.
Sandstone. The cheapest true stone at $10 to $20 per square foot installed. It is acid-resistant but highly porous and prone to surface erosion and spalling, especially in freeze-thaw climates. It appears far more often on patios and pool decks than on interior floors.
Flagstone. Not a stone type but a format — irregular, cleft slabs of slate, sandstone, quartzite or bluestone. This is the table the install quote leaves out, and it is the reason two stones with an identical per-square-foot price are not the same purchase. Two properties explain the whole table. The 250-square-foot row is the anchor from the aggregated project data; the rest scale from the same per-square-foot band. Small rooms do not scale down cleanly. Setup, substrate prep and a tile setter’s minimum-charge day are effectively fixed, so a 50-square-foot powder room in stone commonly quotes closer to $900 than to the $400 the arithmetic suggests.
Waste factor is the other line the tape measure misses. Stone breaks more in cutting than ceramic and has to be sorted for colour and vein, so material is normally ordered with 10 to 15 percent overage — against 5 to 10 percent for porcelain. Finish is where slip resistance is actually purchased. Polished stone in a shower-adjacent floor or around a pool is the highest-slip surface in the table, which is why flamed granite and cleft slate dominate outdoor stone work and why honed and tumbled finishes dominate bathrooms. Format is the quiet multiplier. Larger pieces mean fewer grout lines, which is the visual reason people choose them, but a large-format or slab floor needs a substrate flat to roughly 1/8 inch over 10 feet rather than the looser tolerance ceramic accepts — and getting there means self-leveling compound at $2 to $4 per square foot on top of the flooring quote.
Why Stone Labor Exceeds Ceramic Labor

- Weight. A 24x48 stone tile is a two-person lift; the same size in porcelain often is not.
- Chipping. Stone chips at the cut edge, so cuts are slower and demand a stone-rated continuous-rim diamond blade.
- Dimensional irregularity. Quarried tile is less uniform than pressed porcelain, so tiles are sorted, back-buttered and shimmed rather than simply set.
- Substrate tolerance. The flatter, stiffer substrate stone requires is prep time inside the labor number.
- Translucency. Light stone telegraphs trowel ridges and grey mortar through the tile, which is why white thinset is standard and why a poorly troweled bed shows up permanently after grouting.

Porcelain wins on every economic metric. Natural stone wins on two things that resist pricing: the pattern goes all the way through the material rather than being printed on a surface layer that repeats across the run, and a damaged stone floor can be ground back to new while a damaged porcelain floor is replaced. - Stone selection. The largest single variable. Sandstone at $10 per square foot installed against quartzite at $32 is a 3x spread on the identical room, identical labor, identical everything else.
