Based on aggregated data, natural stone flooring costs approximately $10 to $30 per square foot installed, and a typical 250-square-foot room totals $1,500 to $7,000, with a common project landing around $3,200. Material accounts for roughly $700 to $3,500 of that and labor for $800 to $3,500 — close to a 50/50 split, which separates stone from vinyl, laminate and carpet, where material or labor usually dominates.

“Natural stone” is not one product. It is nine or ten quarried materials with a 6x price spread and, more importantly, wildly different physical properties. And the useful insight from the cost data is this: the stones differ far less in purchase price than they differ in porosity and hardness — and those two properties, not the sticker price, dictate the maintenance bill for the next decade and determine which rooms the stone can realistically go in. Granite and quartzite are dense silicates that shrug off acid and traffic. Marble, travertine and limestone are calcareous — they react with acid, etch on contact with lemon juice or a common bathroom cleaner, and need sealing on a tight cycle. Slate and sandstone are layered sediments that can flake or spall. That is the fork in the road, and it is the one most quotes never price.

Granite. The workhorse. At $12 to $25 per square foot installed it is mid-priced, but its 6-to-7 Mohs hardness and near-zero absorption make it the cheapest stone to own: it does not etch, it barely scratches, and sealing intervals stretch to 3 to 5 years. Honed granite in a kitchen is the single most economically rational stone floor in the category.

Quartzite. Metamorphosed sandstone, and the hardest common flooring stone at Mohs 7. Priced at $14 to $32 per square foot installed for standard tile, with high-grade slab material reaching $45 to $75. It behaves like granite in service — dense, acid-resistant, effectively maintenance-light — and it is frequently mis-sold as marble in showrooms because some quartzites look like it. The distinction is worth several thousand dollars over a decade.

Travertine. A porous calcareous stone with natural voids that are either filled at the factory or left open. At $10 to $18 per square foot installed it is the least expensive of the “premium-looking” stones, and it is soft — Mohs 3 to 4 — so it scratches and needs a tight sealing cycle. Slate. Metamorphic and layered, at $10 to $22 per square foot installed. It is acid-resistant and naturally slip-resistant thanks to its cleft surface, which makes it common in mudrooms, entries and wet areas. Its weakness is delamination: the same layered structure that gives it texture means thin flakes can spall off the surface over time, and lower-grade slate does this more.

Limestone. Chemically close to marble and priced below it at $12 to $24 per square foot installed. Softer and more absorbent than nearly any other flooring stone, with water absorption commonly reaching 8 percent, so it stains readily and takes the tightest sealing cycle in the table.

Sandstone. The cheapest true stone at $10 to $20 per square foot installed. It is acid-resistant but highly porous and prone to surface erosion and spalling, especially in freeze-thaw climates. It appears far more often on patios and pool decks than on interior floors.

Flagstone. Not a stone type but a format — irregular, cleft slabs of slate, sandstone, quartzite or bluestone. Material is cheap at $4 to $10 per square foot, but the labor to fit irregular pieces and grout wide, variable joints pushes installed cost to $12 to $28, one of the widest labor multipliers in the category.

Onyx. Translucent, dramatic, and rarely a good floor. At $35 to $80+ per square foot installed and Mohs 3 to 4, it is a feature material for backlit walls and vanities far more often than for something people walk on.

Porosity, Hardness, and the 10-Year Maintenance Bill

This is the table the install quote leaves out, and it is the reason two stones with an identical per-square-foot price are not the same purchase. Figures are for a 250-square-foot floor over 10 years, using aggregated maintenance pricing: professional sealing at $0.50 to $2 per square foot per cycle, professional deep cleaning at $0.80 to $1.50 per square foot, and re-honing or re-polishing at $3 to $7 per square foot.

Read against the master table, the pattern is stark. Granite at $12 to $25 per square foot installed and travertine at $10 to $18 look like near neighbours on the quote — travertine is the cheaper floor by roughly $500 to $1,750 on a 250-square-foot room. Ten years later the granite has cost $400 to $1,200 in upkeep and the travertine $2,500 to $6,000. The stone that was cheaper to buy is, on aggregated data, $1,500 to $4,000 more expensive to own.

Two properties explain the whole table. Porosity (water absorption) sets the sealing interval: stone that drinks liquid needs an impregnating sealer refreshed often, and stone that does not can go years. Calcium carbonate content sets etch risk: marble, travertine, limestone and onyx react chemically with acid, and no consumer sealer prevents that — a sealer slows absorption, it does not stop a chemical reaction with the stone itself. Hardness (Mohs) is the third axis and sets scratch resistance: at Mohs 3 to 4, marble, travertine and limestone are softer than the quartz sand tracked in on shoes, which is Mohs 7. That is why grit control at entries matters more on calcareous stone than any cleaning product does.

The 250-square-foot row is the anchor from the aggregated project data; the rest scale from the same per-square-foot band. Small rooms do not scale down cleanly. Setup, substrate prep and a tile setter’s minimum-charge day are effectively fixed, so a 50-square-foot powder room in stone commonly quotes closer to $900 than to the $400 the arithmetic suggests.

Waste factor is the other line the tape measure misses. Stone breaks more in cutting than ceramic and has to be sorted for colour and vein, so material is normally ordered with 10 to 15 percent overage — against 5 to 10 percent for porcelain. The room, not the budget, is what usually should drive the stone selection — and the cost data explains why. A kitchen is a room where acid lands on the floor weekly. Finish is where slip resistance is actually purchased. Polished stone in a shower-adjacent floor or around a pool is the highest-slip surface in the table, which is why flamed granite and cleft slate dominate outdoor stone work and why honed and tumbled finishes dominate bathrooms. It is also a cost decision in disguise: a polished floor is a mechanical surface state, not a coating, so when acid dulls a spot the fix is mechanical re-polishing at $3 to $7 per square foot — $750 to $1,750 on a 250-square-foot room — not cleaning.

Stone is heavy and brittle, and that combination is what makes the substrate a real line item rather than a formality. Published industry deflection guidance for natural stone is roughly twice as strict as for ceramic tile: a floor perfectly adequate for porcelain may not be adequate for stone. Stone does not flex — a subfloor that moves cracks the tile itself, not the grout. Where a home’s framing does not meet that standard, reinforcement commonly adds $500 to $2,500 to a 250-square-foot job before any stone arrives on site, and it is the most frequent reason a stone quote lands far above the per-square-foot tables above.

Weight is the related constraint. Format is the quiet multiplier. Larger pieces mean fewer grout lines, which is the visual reason people choose them, but a large-format or slab floor needs a substrate flat to roughly 1/8 inch over 10 feet rather than the looser tolerance ceramic accepts — and getting there means self-leveling compound at $2 to $4 per square foot on top of the flooring quote.

Radiant Heat Compatibility

Stone is the best radiant-heat flooring material there is. Its density gives it high thermal mass, so it holds heat between cycles, and it conducts warmth to the surface far more readily than wood or vinyl. Natural stone wins on two things that resist pricing: the pattern goes all the way through the material rather than being printed on a surface layer that repeats across the run, and a damaged stone floor can be ground back to new while a damaged porcelain floor is replaced. Buyers choosing stone on cost grounds are generally choosing it on the wrong grounds.
